The Butte Archives has had to rethink how it presents its Brown Bag Lunch lecture series this year. In order to reach the maximum number of people safely, the Archives is hosting Brown Bag Lunches on KBOW’s Party Line. Archives staff member Kim Kohn will interview speakers in the studio to discuss topics related to Butte history and goings on the Archives. Brown Bag Lunches will be broadcast at 1:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month on KBOW 550 AM throughout spring.

Join us on Wednesday, May 12, as Kim talks with Mary McMahon about her research into a 1931 “Walkathon” in which her mother participated and won. Walkathons became popular events during the Great Depression, offering entertainment and prizes to participants. In 1931, the event in Butte was held at the Temple Ballroom beginning on April 24 and concluded in July. McMahon will talk about the contest, her mother’s participation, and how the organizers ended up in court.

Mary McMahon has been anxious to research and write about the Walkathon for years. She has enjoyed a varied career in accounting, regulatory compliance, and served two terms as the Butte-Silver Bow Clerk and Recorder. She is active in community theater and pursues many creative interests with her family.
