Press release: United Veterans Council

Your local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, VFW Post 1448, is now taking applications for their patriotic essay contests.   The Voice of Democracy program is open to students in grades 9-12 and the Patriot's Pen Program is open to students in grades 6-8.   The Voice of Democracy program has been VFW’s premier scholarship program since 1947.  Each year, 27,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives by writing and recording an audio essay. This year's theme is "What are the greatest attributes of our Democracy?"  The Patriot's Pen contest had over 73,000 participants from across the country last year and they competed for over $55,000 in National awards.  The theme for this year is "How are you inspired by America?"

VFW Post members are visiting the local schools and distributing applications. They are also placing posters around the community.  The contest rules pamphlets (attached) for the respective contests spell out the contest rules and specifics. You can also contact VFW Representatives Mike Samples (406) 490-7235 or Kirk Waren (406)202-1869. Entries for both contests must be submitted to the local post by October 31, 2023.  There are prizes for the local post, District, and State levels as well as the National Awards.
