Tragedy struck the Mining City yesterday

A Butte man committed suicide during a traffic stop. He was 45.

Officers had stopped the man after an incident the same evening, Sheriff Lester wrote in a text.

The man used a firearm to kill himself as officers attempted to speak with him.

Butte Police officers had stopped the vehicle the man was driving in the 700 block of South Montana Street.

The officers stopped the man to check his welfare after an incident earlier the same evening.

No shots were fired by officers during the incident, and no officers were injured.  The man was the only person in the vehicle.

Butte Police have requested the assistance of the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation to conduct the investigation into the incident.7

“This is a tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died,” Sheriff Ed Lester said.
